Mom Didn’t Realize She Accidentally Named Her Baby ‘Lasagna’ Until After She Was Born

Choosing the perfect name for your baby is arguably one of the hardest parts about actually having a baby. Sure, nausea in the first trimester and the waddling in the third are tough, but picking a name? Impossible.

We’re only half kidding, but really, finding the right name can surely be difficult. Many parents choose to use inspiration from a relative, family name, or even a popular TV show (and hey, some people even name their kids after pandemics, but you can read more about that here).

Once you finally choose the name, you have to make sure the first, middle, and last names all sound good together. Do their initials spell out anything weird? Are there any celebrities out there with the name? What about spelling—should you do two Ls or one? There are really so many questions that go into the name decision process.

Well, one mom clearly didn’t go through all the vital steps to ensure she chose the perfect name for her daughter. While there’s nothing wrong with this baby’s first or middle name, but when you say it together, it’s a recipe for disaster (a literal recipe—hint, hint!).

The mom recently posted to Reddit explaining that they had initially picked the name Elizabeth Jane for their daughter but when she was seven months pregnant and her mother-in-law, Anya, passed away from breast cancer, they knew they had to honor her somehow. So they changed the middle name from Jane to Anya. They kept Jane at the end: Elizabeth Anya Jane.

Perhaps there’s nothing wrong with the name if everyone called the baby Elizabeth. But of course, Elizabeth soon became “Liz.” And what happens when you say Liz and Anya together? It sounds like “Lasagna!”

“My sister pointed out that we named our baby ‘Lasagna,'” the mom wrote on the Reddit post. “I hadn’t made the mental connection but if you put her first and second names together ‘Liz Ayna’ it really does make ‘lasagna.'”

At first, she kind of shrugged her shoulders. Was it really that bad? Did people really use their middle names that much anyway? But when her entire family kept referring to her daughter as “Lasagna,” she began to get more and more fed up.

“They won’t stop and every time I protest they remind me that I’m the one who named her so I’ve made my bed,” the mom wrote.

Now, she isn’t even on speaking terms with her family because they won’t quit it.

Commenters on the post didn’t think it was too much of a big deal, some even joking that she should just change her last name to Garfield since no one loves lasagna more than the classic orange cartoon cat. Some suggested swapping Anya and Jane to name the name Elizabeth Jane Anya. But mostly, people agree that her family should cool it on teasing her and let her be.

What do you think—would you change the name if this happened to you, or leave it as is?
