‘Mod Squad’ Star Passed Away At 84

Michael Cole, known for his role as Pete Cochran on the groundbreaking counterculture drama Mod Squad and his portrayal of Harlan Barrett on General Hospital, has passed away at the age of 84.

Per Deadline, his representatives at BMF confirmed his death but did not disclose further details. Cole enjoyed a prolific 50-year acting career, leaving a lasting mark on television history.

Michael Cole, the talented actor best known for his role as Pete Cochran on the groundbreaking counterculture drama Mod Squad, passed away at the age of 84. Born on July 3, 1940, in Madison, Wisconsin, Cole rose to prominence during the late 1960s, embodying a new kind of television hero and reflecting the social upheaval of the time.

 

Before landing his iconic role, Cole began his career in theater and early television appearances. He appeared in several TV shows and movies throughout the early 1960s, including parts in Gunsmoke, The Virginian, and Run, Buddy, Run. However, his big break came in 1968 when he was cast alongside Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III in Mod Squad. The show followed a trio of young, rebellious undercover cops who tackled crime while grappling with the social issues of the era, such as racism, counterculture movements, and generational divides.

Cole’s character, Pete Cochran, was a troubled youth from a wealthy family who turned to law enforcement as part of his redemption. His portrayal was praised for its authenticity and emotional depth, helping to redefine traditional TV police dramas. Mod Squad ran for five seasons from 1968 to 1973.

Following the success of Mod Squad, Michael Cole continued to work steadily in film and television. He made guest appearances on popular shows such as Fantasy Island, Murder, She Wrote, Diagnosis: Murder, and The Love Boat. In the 1990s, he took on the role of Harlan Barrett in the long-running soap opera General Hospital.

Despite his success, Cole faced personal struggles, including a battle with alcoholism, which he later overcame. His openness about these challenges helped inspire others facing similar difficulties. In later years, he participated in fan conventions and interviews, reflecting on his storied career and the legacy of Mod Squad.
