Misquote of Prince William Remarks About Ukraine War Spark Outrage

Access

Prince William and Kate Middleton visited the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London on Monday March 9, 2022. While there, the prince made comments that were originally misquoted. The misquote was picked up by multiple news sources, and many people were outraged, calling the prince racist and ignorant.

Prince William’s comments about the war in Ukraine, which he probably intended to be compassionate, were as follows:

Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. The news every day, it’s almost unfathomable to actually witness it, to see it. For our generation, it’s very alien to see this in Europe. We’re all right behind you.”

While many people are offended by his comment that “it’s very alien to see this in Europe” considering there have been numerous wars in Europe, the misquote of his comments made his comments sound much, much worse.

The misquote added that Prince William said that while it’s alien to see war in Europe, he’s much more used to seeing war in Africa and Asia, which made it sound like he finds war in Africa and Asia almost acceptable as opposed to “unfathomable” in Europe.

Many people were offended by his comments as they spread across social media.

As mentioned, Prince William never actually said anything about Asia or Africa in his comments, but he did say war in Europe is “very alien.” That does seem quite ignorant.
