Tito Jackson, Michael Jackson’s brother and part of The Jackson 5 group, passed away. He was 70. Although his official cause of death has not yet been released, a longtime family friend believes that Jackson suffered a heart attack.
The friend, Steve Manning, told Entertainment Tonight that Jackson was driving from New Mexico to Oklahoma on September 15 when he passed away.
Tito was the third eldest of the nine Jackson children. Siblings Michael and Janet Jackson went on to become international music superstars.
His sons TJ, Taj and Taryll posted the sad news to Instagram. “It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson is no longer with us. We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being. Some of you may know him as Tito Jackson from the legendary Jackson 5, some may know him as “Coach Tito” or some know him as “Poppa T.” Nevertheless, he will be missed tremendously. It will forever be “Tito Time” for us. Please remember to do what our father always preached and that is “Love One Another.” We love you Pops.”
He was a founding member of The Jackson 5, one of the most successful pop groups in history, alongside his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael Jackson. The Jackson 5 became famous in the late 1960s and 1970s, releasing hit songs like “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” and “I’ll Be There.”
Born Toriano Adaryll “Tito” Jackson on October 15, 1953, in Gary, Indiana, Tito was known for playing guitar and contributing vocals in the band. While Michael Jackson often took the spotlight as the lead singer, Tito’s contributions as a guitarist and supporting vocalist helped shape their Motown sound.
The group was formed in Gary, Indiana in the mid-1960s under the guidance of their father, Joe Jackson. In the beginning, they performed locally, but their big break came when they signed with Motown. With the help of songwriters and producers like Berry Gordy, The Corporation, and others, they achieved massive success.
The Jackson 5’s sound was a blend of pop, R&B, funk, and soul. Their music was characterized by catchy melodies, energetic performances, and smooth harmonies, with Michael often taking the lead vocals.
In 1975, the group left Motown due to creative differences and signed with Epic Records. They had to change their name to The Jacksons because Motown owned the rights to “The Jackson 5.” Jermaine stayed with Motown, and the youngest brother, Randy Jackson, joined the group. As The Jacksons, they continued to release hits such as:”Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)” (1979) and”Can You Feel It” (1981).
Rest In Peace.
