“Black Panther” star Connie Chiume has passed away at age 72, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her family posted the sad news to Instagram on Tuesday.

“The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the International Acclaimed award winning actress Connie Chiume.

“Connie Chiume 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on the 6th August 2024. The family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.”

The actress played the important  role of  Zawavari in  both “Black Panther” and movies and was especially popular in South Africa, where she was born.

The South African government posted a tribute to Chiume on X “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered. #RIPConnieChiume.”

Connie Chiume, born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa. Growing up in a mining town, Connie Chiume was exposed to the harsh realities of apartheid-era South Africa. Despite the challenges, she developed a passion for the arts at an early age. She was  influenced by her father’s love for music and her mother’s storytelling.

Chiume’s professional acting career began in the late 1970s. Her breakthrough came with her role in the popular South African TV series “Zone 14,” where she played the character of Stella Moloi.

She had been a staple in South African television, appearing in popular series such as “Rhythm City” and “Gomora.” In “Gomora,” she plays the role of Mam’Sonto, a complex character who straddles the line between nurturing grandmother and ruthless crime lord.

Chiume’s talents were not only confined to television. She has also made contributions in  theater and film. Her stage performances have earned her critical acclaim, with standout roles in productions like “The Suit” and “King Kong.” In film, Chiume achieved international recognition with her role as Mining Tribe Elder in Marvel’s blockbuster hit “Black Panther” (2018) and its sequel, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022).

Throughout her illustrious career, Connie Chiume has received numerous awards and accolades. She had been honored with the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) for her outstanding performances and contributions to the industry. In 2020, she received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAFTAs.
