Mariah Carey Flashes Back to Her ‘Sad Attempt at the Rachel Hairdo’ from ‘Friends’

In case you missed it, the show “Friends” had an epic and much anticipated reunion that premiered on HBO Max on Thursday May 27th. All 6 friends reunited for the show plus some of the show’s beloved guests.

When we think of the show “Friends,” we remember the relationship between Ross and Rachel. We can’t forget about the relationship between Chandler and Monica either. Then there’s Phoebe’s song “Smelly Cat,” and Joey’s famous pickup line, “How you doin’?”

While the show itself was and is still (in reruns) very popular, in the late ’90s, there was one particular thing about the show that was copied more than anything else – Rachel Green’s hairstyle. In fact, the hairstyle became so popular that it was referred to as “The Rachel.” Many average people and even celebrities copied the look that the show’s stylists created for Jennifer Aniston’s character on the show.

You may know someone who sported the Rachel. Perhaps it’s a style that’s remembered fondly, or perhaps it’s one of those haircuts we look back on with regret.

Mariah Carey liked the look of the Rachel so much that she tried to copy it back in the ’90s as well. She now shares that she regrets that decision. In a recent Instagram post, the singer shared a picture for flashback Friday that showed what she describes as “A sad attempt at the Rachel hairdo.”

Not everyone thinks the haircut was a mistake for Carey. In fact, Aniston commented on the photo writing, “LOVE IT” with a fire emoji.

While Carey thinks she didn’t quite pull off the Rachel look, it turns out it wasn’t even easy for Aniston to pull off the look. Back in 2015, she told Glamour, “I was not a fan of the ‘Rachel.’ That was kind of cringe-y for me. Looking back—honestly, even during that time—I couldn’t do it on my own. I needed [my hairstylist] Chris [McMillan] attached to my hip. Left to my own devices, I am not skilled with a hairbrush and blow-dryer.”

Now, Aniston wears her hair in a way that’s easier for her to style. Long and sleek has become her signature look these days.

Did you ever copy Rachel Green’s hairstyle? Does it surprise you that Mariah Carey tried to copy the Rachel? Does it surprise you that Jennifer Aniston was unable to recreat her signature hairstyle without the help of her hairstylist?
