Accused murderer Luigi Mangione expressed his gratitude to his supporters in his first public statement, released two months after his arrest for allegedly shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The statement appeared on the homepage of a newly launched website created by Mangione’s legal defense team, aimed at countering misinformation and providing updates on the multiple cases against him in connection with the high-profile December 4 assassination in New York City.
“I am overwhelmed by—and grateful for—everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support,” Mangione said in his statement. “Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC [the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn] from across the country, and around the globe.”
He went on, “While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future.”
The statement was released just days after the 26-year-old accepted nearly $300,000 in donations from over 10,000 supporters backing his cause per The New York Post.
He has since pleaded not guilty to multiple state and federal charges related to the brutal killing.
If convicted in his federal case, Mangione could face the death penalty.
Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania last year and initially charged with four counts related to firearm possession and forged documents. He was later indicted in New York on 11 counts, including one count of first-degree murder.
He is accused of fatally shooting 50-year-old Brian Thompson outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on December 4.
