It’s Official — The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade 2020 Will Not Be a Live Event

At this point in 2020, we’re losing track of just how many events have gotten cancelled or have had to figure how ways to change drastically in order to exist. From socially distant concerts to Zoom graduation ceremonies, everything this year is different.

While many people have been looking forward to fall and the holidays to get this year over with already, there are several more cancellations we’ll have to live through before we reach 2021.

We already know that trick-or-treating may not be the safest activity this year (although, it can be safer with some modifications), but the next big holiday after that won’t quite look the same either.

We’re talking about Thanksgiving, also known as Turkey Day. Sure, you can still eat turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie, but you may not be able to have a big meal with your extended family. You also won’t be able to enjoy one form of entertainment that we look forward to watching every single Thanksgiving – the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been an annual tradition for more than 90 years, but this year will be different. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio told WCBS that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Macy’s event will not be what we’re used to seeing.

“It will not be the same parade we’re used to, it will be a different kind of event. They’re reinventing the event for this moment in history and you will be able to feel the spirit and the joy of that day on television, online, not a live parade but something that will really give us that warmth and that great feeling we have on Thanksgiving Day.”

De Blasio added that New York City is working with Macy’s to make sure that the 2020 event will be “safe and creative.”

Macy’s has also made a statement regarding the annual parade.

“For more than 90 years, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has kicked off the holiday season with its signature entertainment spectacle, making it one of the world’s most beloved events. Following our successful, safe and innovative production of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, it is our intention to similarly reimagine Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this November. Stay tuned for more details later this fall.”

While we don’t know what a reimagined Macy’s Thanksgiving day event will look like in 2020, we’re excited to find out. What do you think it will look like? Do you usually watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?
