If you’ve been keeping up with the coronavirus briefings, you may have seen or heard that President Donald Trump recently suggested a way for us to kill off coronavirus: getting an injection of “the disinfectant that knocks [coronavirus] out in a minute.”

“Is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning?” he asked. “As you see, it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

That statement was not met with much satisfaction from the manufacturer of Lysol, of which he quickly released a statement to NBC News about the dangers of injecting any type of disinfectant to ensure people didn’t take this literally.

“As a global leader in health and hygiene products, we must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body (through injection, ingestion or any other route),” said a spokesperson for Reckitt Benckiser, the United Kingdom-based owner of Lysol. “As with all products, our disinfectant and hygiene products should only be used as intended and in line with usage guidelines. Please read the label and safety information.”

Even before Trump spoke, the Environmental Protection Agency released a statement saying, “Never apply the product to yourself or others. Do not ingest disinfectant products.”

Additionally, many healthcare professionals were also quick to turn down this advice, which can be dangerous and doesn’t have any research to back it up.

The White House also released a statement clearing up some confusion about the point the President was trying to make. “President Trump has repeatedly said that Americans should consult with medical doctors regarding coronavirus treatment, a point that he emphasized again during yesterday’s briefing,” press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said.

Well, that clears that up! What is your guess for when a treatment or vaccine will be available for the coronavirus?
