‘Law & Order’ And ‘Blue Bloods’ Actor Passed Away At 88

Veteran actor Ed Wheeler, known for his roles on Law & Order and Blue Bloods, has passed away at the age of 88. His wife, Messeret Stroman Wheeler, confirmed to Deadline that he died on August 21 at a New Jersey hospital due to respiratory failure, following complications from pneumonia. On Monday, she also shared a heartfelt tribute to Wheeler on Instagram.

Born on February 18, 1936, in Brooklyn, Wheeler started working on TV commercials for brands like Pepcid AC, Computer Associates, Reynolds Wrap and more.

Wheeler made his on-screen debut in 1978, appearing in two episodes of the PBS series Watch Your Mouth. His first film role came nearly a decade later, in the 1987 James L. Brooks-directed Broadcast News, which starred William Hurt, Holly Hunter, and Albert Brooks.

Wheeler’s filmography also includes notable roles in Presumed Innocent, Thinner, Daylight, Godzilla, Mickey Blue Eyes, Head of State, and The Good Heart.

Wheeler appeared in a half-dozen episodes of the iconic NBC drama Law & Order between 1992 and 2004. He also guest-starred on popular series such as Ed, Soul Food, Third Watch, New York Undercover, Hope & Faith, and One Life to Live. His most recent acting credit was in a 2010 episode of Blue Bloods.

The late actor and his wife established a production company that produced the 2023 short film Keepers of the Flame.

In addition to his wife, Wheeler is survived by his nieces, nephews, and extended family.
