The Late-Night “Jimmys” Switched Shows As An April Fool’s Day Joke

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

We’ve seen some pretty epic April Fools pranks over the years, but we’re especially partial to the ones where people switch places to trick others. You know how identical twins switch places on their parents or friends? There’s nothing funnier than realizing you’ve been talking to the wrong person the whole time.

Well on April 1 of this year, two comedians who might look different but have the same name decided to switch places. We’re talking about Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel—two funny men who host their own late-night talk shows.

The prank involved Kimmel hosting “The Tonight Show” from New York—the show that Fallon typically hosts—and Fallon hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live” from Los Angeles—the show that Kimmel usually hosts.

The prank was kept so under wraps that not even Fallon’s band, the Roots, weren’t even aware of what was happening until the day of. Only the show writers knew what was about to go down.

When the wrong Jimmy got up on stage for each show, the crowds in both audiences weren’t exactly too upset. In fact, the prank was too impressive to have much to be upset about!

“As far as surprises you’ve seen on ABC this week, this one’s a distant second,” Fallon joked to his new audience.

Each show was pretty hilarious. Kimmel joked about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, joking about how he wasn’t sure if people on the East Coast had heard the news yet. He also killed it with funnies writing thank-you notes and playing “Box of Lies” with Hugh Jackman. And then Fallon went along with Kimmel’s usually pranks by popping up in selfies with Kimmel.

The two Jimmys even dialed each other in for their monologues, so really, the audience was getting two for the price of one. And if anyone was upset, well, Kimmel put it best: “We have a great show tonight. If you don’t like it, it’s okay, it’s not mine.”

People who watched the show could only wish they were in the audience. “As someone who remembers the booking wars of the 90s, it warms my heart to see the camaraderie of the current group of late night hosts,” one fan commented.

“Watched both shows and loved every minute of it. Well done. Something we all needed to cheer us up and make us laugh. Love you Jimmy and Jimmy,” another wrote.

“This is epic. This is the crossover you always wanted but never thought would happen but then actually did and now you’re stoked,” another person stated.
