‘Twilight” actress Kristen Stewart has a new upcoming film coming out soon called “Crimes of the Future,” which is directed by David Cronenberg.

If you know Cronenberg’s previous work in films such as “The Fly” and “Shivers,” you might know that he’s known for portraying some pretty graphic scenes. They’re so graphic, in fact, that many that critics can’t actually handle watching them.

The new picture focuses on a performance artist who undergoes surgery in front of a live audience. Stewart’s role in the film is a bit controversial—an investigative surgeon named Timlin who becomes engrossed with the body in a dystopian world.

Naturally, there were quite a few scenes that were gory and a bit scandalous. That’s why many of the critics in attendance walked out of a press screening of the film during the Cannes Film Festival that occurred last week, especially during some of the more graphic scenes.

Stewart is now speaking out about how that kind of reaction felt for her—which actually may be kind of surprising for fans.

First off, Stewart says that she’s a big fan of Cronenberg’s work, even if there are some controversial scenes. “Everyone loves to talk about how his movies are difficult to watch and it’s fun to talk about people walking out of Cannes screenings,” she said.

It’s the kind of work that’s engaging, and what you can come to expect from movies he directs. “Every single gaping, weird bruise in his movies, it makes my mouth open. You wanna lean in toward it,” she continued. “And it never repulses me ever. The way I feel, it is through really visceral desire and that’s the only reason we’re alive. We’re pleasure sacks.”

Additionally, Stewart explained that walkouts like that usually happen every year at Cannes. So really, it was nothing to take too personally.

Though some people did walk out, the film also received a seven-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere. So clearly, they’re doing something right!
