Reality Court TV drama star Judge Greg Mathis (64) and his wife Linda Reese Mathis (61) are ending their marriage after 39 years together.

Linda filed for divorce in the Los Angeles Superior Court on August 22 per court documents obtained by PEOPLE. She cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the separation. She listed their date of separation as July 17 and is seeking spousal support. The couple’s four children are all in their thirties so there is no need to arrange for custody.

It is not known if the couple had a prenuptial agreement because the couple wed in 1985, before Mathis was on TV.

Mathis has made a few posts about his relationship with Linda on Facebook. In 2021 he wrote, “Age 25, marrying Linda put me on the path in the right direction. I hope my journey is a inspiration to others.”

Judge Greg Mathis started out as a former Michigan district court judge who gained national recognition for his long-running television show, Judge Mathis. Born on April 5, 1960, in Detroit, Michigan, Mathis’s early life was marked by challenges, including growing up in a troubled neighborhood and having run-ins with the law during his youth. However, his life took a significant turn after he was encouraged by his mother to pursue education and turn his life around. Mathis earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and later graduated from the University of Detroit School of Law.

In 1995, Mathis became the youngest judge elected to the 36th District Court in Detroit, where he served until 1998. His work on the bench was notable for his commitment to fairness and for helping those who, like himself, came from challenging backgrounds. After his time on the bench, Mathis transitioned to television. He began presiding over the ‘Judge Mathis’ show in 1999. The show, which has been on the air for over two decades, features Mathis handling small claims cases with a blend of legal jargon, humor, and personal stories. ‘Judge Mathis’ received the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program in 2018.

Following the cancellation of Judge Mathis in 2023, Mathis started another show named ‘Mathis Court With Judge Mathis’ which debuted in September 2023 and co-stars Mathis’ son Amir as a bailiff. In 2022, the multigenerational family was featured on a reality show “Mathis Family Matters.” A snippet of the reality show is down below.
