Jim Carrey Opens Up About Why He’s Considering Retiring from Acting
Many celebrities had a lot to say about what happened between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars. In case you missed it, Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, that Smith didn’t take well. Smith has alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss, had shaved her head, and Rock joked about not being able to wait for GI Jane 2 to come out.
Instead of fuming from his seat, Smith decided to get up and give Rock a big, hard slap across his face, in front of the whole present crowd and live watching audience. After getting back to his chair, he proceeded to angrily shout at him, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth,” several times.
Clearly, Rock had hit some kind of nerve. But does that make it okay? It’s not like Rock used physical violence on Smith before Smith decided to attack him. But he got a standing ovation after winning Best Actor for his leading role on King Richard, which wasn’t long after the slap. Plus, many people gave him kudos for stepping up and defending his wife.
However, the majority of people are not accepting of his behavior. For one, actor Jim Carrey was absolutely disgusted by what happened.
“I was sickened,” Carrey said. “I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. And it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.”
Carrey says that if it happened to him, he’d have a lawsuit out in no time. ”I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for 200 million dollars.”
Overall, Carrey believes that Smith should’ve tried a different way to express his anger. “If you want to yell from the audience or disapprove or show disapproval, or say something on Twitter or whatever. You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words,” he said.
Not long before the incident, Carrey spoke with Hollywood Access about what’s next for him—which is likely that he’s going to be retiring soon. Hard to believe after so many years on the big screen—but if he was thinking about it before, we’re sure he’s thinking about it even more after the slap.
