Even if you missed the 2022 Academy Awards show, you’ve probably heard about the slap that happened live during the show. Chris Rock was on stage cracking jokes, because that’s his job, and one of those jokes happened to be about Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife. Will was so upset by the joke, that he stormed on stage and slapped Chris in the face.

Since that time, Will has apologized and been reprimanded by the Academy. Chris has even mentioned and joked about the incident during comedy shows. Now, for the first time, we’re hearing from Jada what was going through her mind when the slap happened.

As part of a promotion for her new memoir, “Worthy,” Jada sat down for a one-on-one interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb. Hoda talked to Jada about the slap and about other secrets that she reveals in her book. One of those secrets is that in 2016, Jada and Will decided to live separately. While they never legally got divorced, Jada explained, “We haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time.”

When Will slapped Chris at the Oscars and yelled at him to “keep my wife’s name out of your mouth,” Jada was shocked that he was calling her his wife. She also explained that she was “worried for Will.” She didn’t know what was prompting him to act this way.

Meanwhile, what wasn’t shown on TV was that after Will sat back down, Chris tried to talk to Jada from the stage. That only made Will more upset, but Chris was trying to apologize to Jada. Jada reveals that he told her, “Jada, I meant no harm.”

After Chris apologized to Jada from the Oscar stage, Jada told him, “Chris, this is about some old sh**.”

What were the old issues that were making Will so upset? They might’ve had to do with the fact that Chris once asked Jada out on a date while she was married to Will.

Even though Will and Jada were living separately since 2016, they keep up the public appearance of being happily married. However, there were sometimes rumors that the couple was getting divorced, and one summer, Chris heard the rumors and believed them. In an interview with PEOPLE, Jada explained that Chris “called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized, and that was that.”
