This Iconic Ice Cream Cake From the ’90s Is Returning to Stores After 20 Years

Ice-cream is one of our all-time favorite comfort foods. Even on a cold winter day, when we’re craving dessert, we often want a scoop (or a pint) of one of our favorite decant flavors.

We started our relationship with ice-cream at a young age. We honestly don’t even remember the first time we tasted the delicious, creamy dessert. It might have been an ice-cream bar from an ice-cream truck. It might have been at an ice-cream shop. It might have been a store-bought variety our parents brought home. It’s not really important. What’s important is that one of our favorite childhood ice-cream desserts is making a comeback.

Do you remember Viennetta? It’s a rectangular-shaped ice-cream cake that was sold in grocery stores in the ’90s. It originated in the U.K. but made it across the pond just a few years later.

Viennetta made ice-cream seem upscale. The delicate ripples of ice-cream on the outside, and the eye-catching layers of cake and chocolate on the inside made it perfect for literally any occasion or even an otherwise ordinary day.

Viennetta was created by Good Humor back in the ’80s when ice-cream truck sales were lower than they had been. It may be hard to believe that the same company that created ice-cream bars created a fancy European-sounding ice-cream cake, but it’s true.

Eventually, Good Humor’s parent company, Unilever, acquired the ice-cream brand Breyers, and they chose to rebrand Viennetta under the Breyers brand. Perhaps this commercial from the ’90s will remind you just how fancy Viennetta was supposed to be.

According to TODAY, one of their own staff members described Viennetta saying, “It was the fanciest treat my little mind could imagine.”

The ice-cream cake continued to be marketed and sold in the U.K., but it hasn’t been sold in the United States for 20 years. That’s about to change.

According to a press release, Unilever (the parent company of brands including Breyers, Popsicle, Magnum, Klondike, Talenti and Good Humor) is releasing 25 new frozen desserts in 2021. Although “new,” many of these treats are actually nostalgic. The company is bringing back previously popular frozen treats including Viennetta.

The press release states, “Viennetta, the beloved classic take on an ice cream cake, has finally returned to the U.S., thanks to Good Humor! Fans have clamored for Viennetta’s return for almost 30 years, and in 2021, Good Humor grants their wish.” The press release goes on to say, “Good Humor Viennetta can make any day a celebration and is great for all special occasions: birthdays, holidays, BBQs, parties, or an after-dinner treat!”

The cake will be sold in grocery stores starting January 2021.

Are you excited about the return of Viennetta? Will you save it for a special occasion, or will you use it to make an ordinary day special?
