How to Transform an Orange into a Candle

We don’t know about you, but we love having a candle burning in the house. Whether it’s for the soothing aroma, the gentle glow, or all of the above, candles can bring a really calming, homey feel to just about any space. The downside? You have to typically go out and purchase candles, and often you pay a pretty penny for them.

Our favorite candles are always the ones with a fresh, fruity scent — so why not skip the waxy middleman and turn fruit itself into a candle?! It sounds kind of crazy, but it’s actually simpler than you might think. Plus, you’ll save a few bucks for the same effect!

To get started, all you need is an orange, olive oil, a knife, and this video from our friends at Rumble.

First, you’ll take your knife and cut gently across the orange, enough to just get through the skin. Go all the way around the circumference of the citrus before sticking your finger under the peel and gently separating it from the orange.

When removing the peel from the orange, be very delicate. You want to keep the peel whole because it will act as the base of your candle, and you also want to make sure that the stem remains intact — this will become your “wick”.

Next, pour your olive oil into the basin that the peel has made, and make sure to pour some on the stem, too. You don’t have to fill the entire peel with oil, about halfway will do.

And that’s all you need to do to construct your candle! Light the stem (your makeshift “wick”) and your all-natural, homemade orange candle will burn. The stem might burn all the way down to the oil, which is totally natural, but it will stay burning for a decent amount of time.

Mother-in-law coming over for an impromptu visit and no candle around to freshen up the air? You only need these three simple things to create a candle that will make your entire home smell divine (we love the smell of olive oil, so it’s just an added bonus on top of the fresh citrus scent!) in a snap.
