This Hidden Paradise in Canada Will Make You Feel Like You’re on a Caribbean Island

When someone mentions Canada, where does your mind go? The Mounties? Bacon? Deftly cold weather? Unless you live there or visit on a regular basis, you’ve probably never looked at Canada as a summer destination spot. It is one.

Turquoise waters, a white sand beach, and a boardwalk await you on the shores of Ontario. That’s right. We said Ontario. On the coast of Lake Huron, you’ll find Southampton Beach, famed for its Caribbean-like setting and a magnet for tourists and locals alike.

Every summer, Southampton turns into a hotspot where people enjoy swimming, strolling, and catching the Northern Lights. Considered a small town with lots of charm, you’ll find restaurants, inns, antique shops, and a sandy beach that stretches 4 kilometers (approximately 2.5 miles).

One of the things that attracts people to Southampton are its breathtaking sunsets. Anywhere you stand along the shoreline, you’ll be mesmerized by the golden orange skies in front of you. And if you’re lucky, you can also grab a front row seat for a stunning display of the Northern Lights.

A quiet beach that is a favorite among the older set, Southampton is less party and more relaxation. If you don’t want to stay in one of its cottages or bed-and-breakfasts, there are plenty of camping areas where you can set up your RV  or tents.

Nearby, Chantry Island is home to a bird sanctuary where tens of thousands of nesting and migratory birds find refuge. The island is also known for its lighthouse that visitors can tour during certain times of the year. But one of the things that makes Chantry Island so interesting is the number of shipwrecks that surround it. There are somewhere around 50!

However, shipwrecks aren’t unique to the island. A British vessel from the War of 1812 was unearthed in Southampton Beach where it ran along shore during a battle. It’s one of the many sights visitors can enjoy when they come for their vacation.

In addition to the glistening waters and warm beach, you might just fall in love with its butterfly gardens too. Families can enjoy playing in the water, picnics, or spending time at one of Southampton’s playgrounds. During the summer, nighttime walks can be filled with romance, serenity, or even a fireworks display.

Go for a hike, frolic in a boat, sit on a bench and take in the sounds of the water, or take your time as you make your way down the boardwalk. With so much to see and do in Southampton Beach and around Bruce County, you may very well end up making this place one of your favorite vacation getaways.

No, it’s not the Bahamas and it’s not Bermuda, but your senses will enjoy the scenery and blue waters all the same. Who knew that spending time at a lake could be like this?

Did you know such a beach existed on Canada’s Lake Ontario shores? Have you ever visited this region? Would you put this destination on your vacation to-do list?
