Jack Russell, Glam band singer of Great White, has passed away at 63.

Only last month, the singer retired from touring due to his diagnosis of Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy. On August 15, surrounded by family and friends, Russell died “peacefully” according to K.L. Doty (memoir co-author) per Consequence.

“Jack is loved and remembered for his sense of humor, exceptional zest for life, and unshakeable contribution to rock and roll where his legacy will forever thrive,” Doty wrote. “His family asks for privacy at this time.”

Jack Russell is best known as the lead vocalist for the American rock band Great White. Born on December 5, 1960, in Montebello, California, Russell’s journey into the world of rock music began in his teenage years. He formed Great White in 1977, alongside guitarist Mark Kendall. The band gained significant popularity in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Russell’s distinctive voice and charismatic stage presence were pivotal in defining Great White. The band made it with their 1987 album “Once Bitten,” which featured the hit single “Rock Me.” This track showcased Russell’s vocal range and the band’s ability to blend heavy rock riffs with melodic hooks. The success continued with their 1989 album “…Twice Shy,” which included their most famous song, a cover of Ian Hunter’s “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” This single earned them a Grammy nomination.

Despite their success, Great White faced numerous challenges, including lineup changes and personal struggles among band members. Russell himself battled addiction and health issues, which at times affected his career. In 2003, tragedy struck during a Great White concert at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island, where a fire broke out, resulting in the deaths of 100 people, including the band’s guitarist, Ty Longley. This incident deeply impacted Russell and the band, leading to years of court battles and emotional challenges.

In the aftermath, Russell continued to pursue his love for music. He eventually formed “Jack Russell’s Great White,” a separation from the original band, allowing him to continue performing and recording. This new formation released albums like “He Saw It Comin'” in 2017, which received positive reviews.

Rest in Peace
