A Michigan community is grieving the devastating loss of Scott and Marylou Levitan, grandparents who tragically passed away in separate incidents just days apart during the holiday season.

Scott Levitan died on December 31 after falling through the ice while fishing on Lake George in Addison Township. Five days earlier, on December 27, his wife Marylou lost her life in a head-on car collision in Oakland Township. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office described the tragedies as “a heartbreaking start to the new year.”

Marylou had been traveling to retrieve her husband’s vehicle following his ice fishing accident when her vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, was struck. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing, authorities said.

Scott, a beloved educator at South Lyon Middle School for over two decades, was remembered fondly by colleagues and friends. “He was a great friend, one of the best human beings I’ve ever met in my life,” said Jamie Izzo, who taught alongside Scott for 20 years.

Izzo recounted the shock of hearing the news. “I got up in the morning, checked that text. It was awful. Awful. And then in the next day or two, I got the other text which was unbelievable.”

Jeff Henson, South Lyon’s head football coach, shared similar sentiments, recalling how Scott was one of the first people to welcome him when he joined the school. “He became one of my biggest supporters,” Henson said.

Marylou, a dedicated grandmother, was known for her love of sports, particularly Detroit teams. She held season tickets for the Detroit Tigers and was a devoted fan of the Red Wings and Lions, according to her family.

The Levitans had been married for 40 years and were deeply cherished by their community. Family members chose not to speak on camera but described Marylou as a loving and vibrant individual who shared her enthusiasm for life with everyone around her.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the ice fishing incident and the car crash, leaving loved ones grappling with the sudden loss of two remarkable individuals.
