Grandma Was Posing for a Picture on an Iceberg When It Started Drifting Off to Sea

A photo didn’t go as expected when a grandmother struck a pose during her Iceland vacation. Catherine Streng shared the details on Twitter of her father and grandmother’s interesting trip that required a rescue.

The 24-year-old American is currently teaching in South Korea, and she says that her family likes to leave Texas to sprint around the world. While visiting Iceland’s Jökulsárlon glacial lagoon at Diamond Beach, Streng’s grandmother sat on a beached glacier throne to take a picture.

A wave came in and she was suddenly swept out to sea while still seated on it. Streng’s father took photos of the whole thing and provided funny captions, and updated Streng with a series of texts that she shared online.

In one, the English professor wrote a detailed description to his daughter of how it happened:

“She ascended the throne after a wave had pulled back and left it briefly exposed on the beach. Then a wave washed in and dislodged the ice throne, rocking it from side to side. When the wave retreated, it lifted the dislodged throne and carried her out with the tide.”

We know that you have questions, but we’ll answer the first one about Granny’s safety: she is fine. Fortunately, a boater witnessed the glacial event and rowed out to rescue her. Randy Lacount, a Florida man who is skilled in boating and water safety, brought the woman back to shore.

According to Buzzfeed, Streng’s grandmother is not a daredevil who made an impulsive decision. Other visitors had also taken pictures on the iceberg first and Streng’s father cleared it with the tour guide before having his mom take a turn at posing. No one was expecting a wave to crash the party.

Iceland’s Diamond Beach is a popular stop for tourists and earned its name for the number of iceberg pieces that wash up on the black sand. Jökulsárlon Lagoon flows into the Atlantic Ocean so it’s a good thing Grandma’s icy excursion was a short one.

Streng’s post attracted plenty of comments, which of course included at least one joke about Princess Elsa from Frozen. Popular quotes include:

“Elsa in 60 years”

“Granny is going to Atlantis”

“Oh no! Lol I feel bad for laughing! But glad she’s safe!!”

In spite of the heart-stopping action, Buzzfeed reports that Streng’s dad and grandmother continued to enjoy their Nordic vacation. Iceland has seen an uptick in tourism over the past few years due to news of glaciers melting and the sight of them is a huge draw.

On a sadder note, the country has seen its share of tourist accidents at some of its popular attractions. Among them are those involving walking on ice or being caught up in icy waves.

Everyone is relieved that Streng’s grandmother is A-OK but she is surprised that her granny became a viral star. For a few moments, she got to sit on an ice throne just like a queen.

Are you amused by this icy tale? Have you been to Iceland and this lagoon? Would you like to take a pic atop a glacier?
