Words of wisdom tend to come from parents and elders in the family, but you know that kids are equally capable of dropping some nuggets here and there too. Those gems are sometimes better than the quotes plastered on your social media page that day.

Hot off the web is the story of a 2-year-old girl in South Carolina named Sophia Benner. The little lady earned a spot on the all-star team for being successful at using the potty for the month, and therefore, a pretty handsome reward. If you have kids, then you know that dangling the hope of a prize in front of them will breed a laser focus on the object.

They have their minds set on just what they want for the 1,000 days (in their minds) leading up to the shopping experience. Such was the case for Sophia, and her parents, Brandi and Nick, took her to Target to claim her reward: a new doll.

Mom Brandi posted on Facebook about their trip because it turned out to be an unusual one. She shared that during checkout, the cashier began asking Sophia questions about the doll. The woman first asked if she was going to a birthday party, and then if the doll was a gift for a friend. Both Sophia and her mom were puzzled, so Brandi let the cashier know it was a potty-training award.

You might be thinking it’s not so bizarre that the cashier is making small talk. Well, it just so happens that Sophia and her family are white, and the doll she chose was a black doctor, complete with a lab coat and stethoscope. Brandi told CNN that Sophia took her time picking which one she wanted:

“She kept going back to the doctor doll, because in her mind, she is already a doctor. . .She loves giving checkups, and if you come in the house, she’ll tell you that’s the first thing you need.”

What the cashier said after those first few comments got Brandi riled up. She asked Sophia,

“Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?”, to which the tot replied, “Yes please!”

The woman continued with,

“But she doesn’t look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look like you.”

As Brandi started to fume, Sophia answered rather matter-of-factly:

“Yes, she does. She’s a doctor like I’m a doctor. And I’m a pretty girl and she’s a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?”

And just like that, the woman got served by an adorable 2-year-old and Sophia got to enjoy her doll in peace. Since the story broke, Brandi’s post has been shared over 200,000 times and has over 42,000 comments. Most of them are supportive and highlight the innocence of children and how their insight is sometimes keener that that of adults. Regardless of what anyone thinks, Sophia loves her new doll and that’s all that counts! What do you think of this little girl’s candor? How would you have responded to the cashier? Share with us in the comments!
