Valentine’s Day may be for lovers, but Galentine’s Day is for friends.

Sure, Valentine’s Day may get most of the hype, but romantic relationships are far from the only meaningful relationships worth celebrating.

Today, February 13th, 2020, Galentine’s Day is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The holiday may have unofficially been a thing before 2010, but we can thank fictional character Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) from the show Parks and Recreation for making it a serious celebration.

In case you missed this ultra important episode, in the 2nd season of the show during the 16th episode, Leslie explained what Galentine’s Day is all about.

“Every February 13, my ladyfriends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

Galentine’s Day is a great excuse to call up your ladyfriends, leave the kids with their dad, and book a spa day, go out for brunch, or have a girls night out.

There’s no law saying that Galentine’s Day has to be February 13th. If you don’t have a significant other, it can definitely be a substitute for Valentine’s Day on February 14th, or it can be another day that you and your ladyfriends can set aside time to hang out together and celebrate your friendship.

Since this is the 10th anniversary of Galentine’s Day, we think it calls for extra celebration. Time to break out the bubbly and treat our friends to some thoughtful gifts, Leslie Knope style. If you’re being true to the holiday’s creator, your celebration will also include waffles, one of Leslie’s favorite things. If you’re into ice-cream (because, who isn’t) we think a waffle cone would totally count.

Do you celebrate Galentine’s Day? Did you know that the holiday was created by a TV show? Who are your favorite ladyfriends?
