Former NBA Star & Coach Passed Away At 59

Joe Wolf, a former college and NBA basketball player and coach. He was 59. His death was announced by the Milwaukee Bucks where he was working as coach for the NBA team’s G-League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd. According to PEOPLE, the statement was made on September 26.

“The Milwaukee Bucks and Wisconsin Herd are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Herd assistant coach and Kohler native Joe Wolf. Throughout his life, Joe touched many lives and was a highly respected, adored and dedicated coach and player across the NBA. His well-regarded talent was instrumental for the Bucks and Herd over eight years with the organization, including as a player and coach.”

The former Herd coach died from a heart attack.

Joe Wolf was born on December 17, 1964, in Kohler, Wisconsin, Wolf played college basketball at the University of North Carolina under legendary coach Dean Smith from 1983 to 1987. As a power forward/center, he was known for his physicality, hustle, and versatility. Wolf was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round (13th overall) of the 1987 NBA Draft. During his 11-year NBA career (1987–1999), he played for several teams, including the Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, and Orlando Magic. Known primarily as a role player, Wolf provided rebounding, defense, and interior scoring. After retiring as a player, Wolf transitioned into coaching. He worked as an assistant coach in the NBA and also served as a head coach in the NBA G League (formerly the D-League).
