Former College Quarterback & Special Forces Soldier Passed Away At 27
Former Central Michigan University quarterback Thomas “Tommy” Lazzaro, 27, died in a hunting accident on Sunday, December 22, at Eglin Air Force Base in Walton County, Florida. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed the incident, and Lazzaro was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said it appears to be a tragic accident, with everyone involved staying on site and cooperating with authorities.
Lazzaro played four seasons with the Central Michigan Chippewas, setting a career-high 153 passing yards in a 2018 game against Michigan State. After college, he joined the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant.
His loss is deeply felt by his community and those who knew him.
“We deeply mourn the loss of U.S. Army Sgt. Thomas Lazzaro of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne),” Col. Patrick Nelson, the group’s commander, told Task & Purpose, a military news agency.
“We will never forget his dedication, courage, and commitment to safeguarding our freedoms,” Nelson added.
“His absence leaves a void that will be felt professionally and personally among those who had the honor of working with Thomas. Our heartfelt condolences extend to his family, friends, and comrades during this difficult time.”
The TV & Radio Voice of the Central Michigan Chippewas, Adam Jaska, posted a tribute on X.

Before joining the 7th Special Forces Group, Thomas “Tommy” Lazzaro was a standout football player. He led Pine Creek High School to back-to-back Colorado state championships in 2013 and 2014, according to a tribute shared by the Emerald Coast Funeral Home.
Lazzaro went on to play as a starting quarterback at Central Michigan University while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business.
