Actor Dishes on a Possible Third ‘Father of the Bride’ Movie

With so many sitcoms getting reboots decades after going off the air, it wouldn’t be such a shocker to see a movie franchise revived – not remade – in the same fashion. Father of the Bride, a classic from the ‘90s, could be making a return to screens.

There have been rumors circulating for years that a third installment was in the works, with actors George Newbern and Kimberly Williams-Paisley speaking about the subject at various times. Newbern played the love of Annie Banks’ life in both films, to the ire of Steve Martin’s George Banks.

28 years after the first film was released, Newbern, now 52, would definitely be on board with a new sequel. In an interview with Us Weekly, he said that the director had written a script already:

“Charles Shyer wrote a script. I know there’s a script out there. And there’s talk. I don’t know how far it got but I’m sure most of the cast would be into it if the script was right. So maybe that’s just a question of that happening.”

When asked what he thought his character would be up to these days, Newbern responded:

“I think Bryan MacKenzie would probably be a grandfather now. They had a kid so he’s probably got a grandkid at this point, I think. Or at least close to it. Or his daughter would be getting married. He’s probably invested in a startup in the Silicon Valley because they are on the West Coast. And they probably live up in the Bay area. They got four kids. They need to shoot a third one. We need to do a third one. That would be great.”

We’re not sure if we’d be ready to see Bryan as a grandfather yet, but perhaps he’d be getting ready to walk his own daughter down the aisle and with his ridiculously overprotective and neurotic father-in-law there to tag team the poor groom.

Who can forget the interactions between George Banks and Franck, the wedding planner played by Martin Sheen? Not much has been said about whether Steve Martin or Diane Keaton would reprise their roles as now-grandparents, but Kimberly Williams-Paisley would definitely be on board.

The actress told ET that she thought it would be fun to do, but she hasn’t seen a script or heard of any sure plans. For her part, she would love to do another sequel:

“I mean, there could be new brides or grooms, but yeah, it’s such a beautiful, classic movie, and people still talk to me about the movie every day. So it’d be fun.”

Both Newbern and Williams-Paisley have been staying busy, with Newbern appearing in Scandal and Williams-Paisley starring in a number of Hallmark films. With both actors excited about the possibility of a new Father of the Bride movie, fans can’t help but get excited too.

Do you think there will be another sequel in the franchise? What were your favorite moments from each movie? Which actors would you love to see return?
