One of the greatest pitchers in Boston Red Sox history, Luis Tiant, has passed away. He was 83.  Tiant was a former Major League Baseball pitcher who was best known for his time with the Boston Red Sox in the 1970s. Born on November 23, 1940, in Marianao, Cuba, Tiant had a long and successful career in the MLB that spanned from 1964 to 1982.

Fred Lynn posted a tribute on X.

Tiant was famous for his unique pitching style, which included a distinctive twisting windup that confused batters. He played for several teams, including the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Angels, but his best years came with the Red Sox. Some of Luis Tiant’s career highlights include being a three-time All-Star (1968, 1974, 1976) and a two-time American League ERA leader (1968, 1972). He was also a key member of the 1975 Boston Red Sox team that reached the World Series, where he won two complete games against the Cincinnati Reds, helping make the series a classic. He was known as “El Tiante.”

He was known for his resilience and ability to reinvent himself as a pitcher after suffering injuries early in his career. Tiant’s father, Luis Tiant Sr., was also a professional baseball player in the Negro Leagues, which adds a rich family legacy to his story.

Though Tiant never made it to the Baseball Hall of Fame, he is considered one of the greatest pitchers in Red Sox history and a beloved figure in Boston sports. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997.After retiring, he had remained involved in baseball and often makes appearances at Red Sox events.

Rest In Peace.
