Fans Share a Resurfaced Clip Of Meghan Markle In 1993

Meghan Markle‘s name has been permeating headlines this week in the wake of her tell-all interview with Oprah on Sunday.

Meghan and her husband, Harry, sat down with Oprah to reveal the injustices they’ve faced at the hand of the royal family. As it turns out, Meghan has been a crusader for equality from a very young age.

An aptly timed clip of an 11-year-old Meghan resurfaced this week, perfectly coinciding with her bombshell interview and International Women’s Day. The clip originally aired on Nickelodeon in 1993 as part of a social studies assignment for her class.

The assignment asked students to watch advertisements and dissect them for underlying messages. An astute Meghan Markle pointed out the sexist undertones of a dishwashing detergent commercial that seemed to imply only women should be responsible for household chores.

“Women are fighting greasy pots and pans,” the Proctor & Gamble commercial began.

This didn’t sit well with Meghan, who boldly (and in impressive cursive) wrote to the company campaigning for change. In her opinion, the company should not have been perpetuating the stereotype that only women do dishes.

“I don’t think it’s right for kids to grow up thinking these things — that just Mom does everything,” she says in the clip. “It’s always ‘Mom does this,’ and ‘Mom does that.’”

Her efforts were successful, and the company changed “women” to “people” in the advertisement. She later said she wasn’t fully aware of the significance of her actions at the time.

“When I was just 11-years-old, I unknowingly and somehow accidentally became a female advocate,” she said in a 2015 speech at a U.N. Women’s Conference. “I realized, in that moment, the magnitude of my actions.”

Meghan’s letter landed her on the popular Nickelodeon show, “Nick News.” Former host of the program, Linda Ellerbee, told “Inside Edition” she was acutely aware at the time that Meghan was not your average 11-year-old girl.

“It’s absolutely clear that this young woman was strong in her beliefs,” she said. ”She believed in women, she believed in her own power, and she wasn’t afraid to reach out and say I want my power, I want my rights.”

Not much has changed over the years, as Meghan continues to advocate for what’s fair and just. During her interview with Oprah, she spoke out about the royal family’s indiscretions, calling the institution out for what she says was racist behavior behind closed doors.
