Over 500 Million Facebook Users’ Phone Numbers and Personal Data Have Been Leaked Online

When you sign up for a Facebook account, you provide certain personal information like your email address, phone number and birth date. According to Facebook’s terms of service, this personal information should be safe and not shared. Hackers say otherwise.

Over 500 million Facebook users now have their personal data easily accessible to hackers. This isn’t exactly a new data leak. It took place in 2019, but just recently, the data was posted for free on a hacker forum which makes it much easier for scammers to access the data.

According to Facebook, they have fixed the issue that caused the data leak in 2019, but that doesn’t exactly solve the problem if your data is already out there. Even Mark Zuckerberg’s cell phone number was leaked, so nobody was safe. Watch the video below to learn more about this situation.

If your data is out there, there’s not really a whole lot you could do, but it would be nice to know whether or not our data was leaked so we could be on the looked for scams and consider identity theft protection. No word if Facebook is going to notify people whose data has been leaked.

Alon Gal is the chief technology officer of cybercrime intelligence firm Hudson Rock. This is the company that discovered the data leak. He told Insider, “Individuals signing up to a reputable company like Facebook are trusting them with their data, and Facebook [is] supposed to treat the data with utmost respect. Users having their personal information leaked is a huge breach of trust and should be handled accordingly.”

Are you concerned about the possibility of your personal data being leaked? Do you think Facebook should notify everyone whose data was leaked? Would it make a difference? Does a data leak like this make you reconsider sharing personal data with a company like Facebook?
