The Eagles, one of rock’s most iconic bands, will undergo a significant lineup change as they continue their Las Vegas Sphere residency. Guitarist Steuart Smith, who has been a vital member of the group since 2001, has officially stepped back due to health challenges stemming from a Parkinsonism diagnosis.
Smith released a heartfelt statement addressing his decision, saying, “It is with profound regret that, due to performance issues associated with my recently diagnosed Parkinsonism, I find that I must bow out of my role with the Eagles while I can still do so gracefully.” He added, “It’s been a great quarter of a century, and I had hoped to be able to finish out this year with the band, but I must now do what’s best for all concerned.”
Parkinsonism, often linked to Parkinson’s disease, is an incurable degenerative brain condition that affects muscle control, movement, and balance—key elements for a touring musician.
In Smith’s absence, singer-songwriter Chris Holt will take over as guitarist. Holt, who has collaborated with the band in the past, expressed both honor and humility about stepping into the role. “I’m trying to fill the giant shoes of all three that came before me,” he told the Dallas Morning News, referencing Smith and former Eagles guitarists Don Felder and Bernie Leadon. “It’s some of the most beautiful guitar work ever recorded, in my opinion. It’s the highest honor for me to do it, and it’s my duty to get it right.”
Holt’s presence in the band coincides with the release of his upcoming album, Across the Milky Way, slated for early summer, according to his record label, Idol Records.
Eagles co-founder Don Henley shared his gratitude for Smith’s contributions, stating, “Steuart Smith has retired from touring. The Eagles will be forever grateful for the extraordinary talents that he brought to both our recordings and live performances. Steuart will be greatly missed, but he will always be part of our musical family. We know our many fans join us in wishing him well.”
Smith joined the Eagles more than two decades ago, playing an instrumental role in the band’s resurgence after the departure of Don Felder. Known for his exceptional musicianship and ability to seamlessly perform the Eagles’ timeless hits, Smith became a cornerstone of their live shows and studio recordings.
Fans at the Las Vegas Sphere have already seen Holt perform in Smith’s place, signaling the beginning of this new chapter for the band. While Smith’s departure marks a bittersweet moment, the Eagles’ legacy remains as strong as ever, with Holt now carrying forward the tradition of excellence.
As the Eagles continue their residency and tour schedule, fans around the world are sending their well-wishes to Steuart Smith during this difficult time. His contributions over the last 25 years have left an indelible mark on the band’s history and the hearts of millions of listeners.
