In an interview with GQ Hype Spain, pop superstar Demi Lovato revealed that she has decided to go back to using she/her pronouns. This announcement comes after Lovato publicly embraced they/them pronouns earlier, sparking conversations and discussions about gender identity. The decision to switch back was driven by Lovato’s personal experience of feeling exhausted from constantly explaining her preferred pronouns.

Lovato’s journey of self-discovery and exploration of gender identity has been a highly publicized one. Lovato has been an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, using her platform to raise awareness and promote inclusivity. In March 2021, Lovato came out as non-binary and shared her pronouns as they/them.

However, in the GQ Hype Spain interview, Lovato opened up about the challenges she faced in using they/them pronouns. She expressed feeling overwhelmed and drained from constantly having to explain and educate people about her gender identity. Lovato stated, “I realized that as much as I was excited about [they/them pronouns], it wasn’t necessarily the right answer for me, for right now.”

The Spout Podcast, hosted by Joe Serafini, also provided an opportunity for Lovato to discuss her pronoun switch. She elaborated on the exhaustion she felt, saying, “I just realized that over time, as I felt more comfortable and more confident in who I was, that I just wanted to simplify things a little bit more, and be able to express myself in a way that felt the most authentic to me.”

She went on to say: “I’m such a fluid person. I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced, and my masculine and feminine energy, so that when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said “Women” and “Men”, I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman.” She also noted that she “didn’t feel like a man. I just felt like a human. And that’s what they/them is about. For me, it’s just about feeling human at your core.”

And she summed it up by saying: “Recently I’ve been feeling more feminine so I’ve adopted she/her again.”

Throughout the interview, Lovato emphasized the significance of self-acceptance and self-love. She shared, “I’m constantly growing, and I’ve realized that my journey is ongoing. I may make more changes in the future, but right now, this feels like the right path for me.”

Similarly, in the GQ Hype Spain interview, Lovato noted: “It was absolutely exhausting. And that is one of the reasons that have led me to also feel comfortable with the feminine pronoun. I just got tired.”
