Country Music Star Files For Divorce, Walks Away From Music Industry

Country star Maren Morris has decided to make quite a few major changes this year in both her career and her personal life. The first big change she announced was her decision to walk away from the country music industry.

During an interview with The New York Times “Popcast” podcast, Morris explained, “I don’t want to say goodbye, but I really cannot participate in the really toxic arms of this institution anymore.”

Morris made it clear that she does love Nashville, but there are certain parts of the country music industry that she doesn’t want to be a part of anymore. She said, “We have amazing songwriters (in Nashville), so that’s not going to change. But I couldn’t do this, like, sort of circus anymore of feeling like I have to absorb and explain people’s bad behaviors and laugh it off. I just couldn’t do that after 2020, particularly. I’ve changed. A lot of things changed about me that year.”

At the time, her husband, singer songwriter Ryan Hurd, defended Morris’s decision. On Instagram, he wrote, “I’m sick of every talking head having some kind of stupid opinion about” Morris. He asked, “Why are you surprised when she calls out something racist or homophobic? I’m sick of people getting rewarded for it.”

Even though Hurd stood by her side during this major career decision, Morris is now choosing to no longer stand by his side. She has filed for divorce.

Morris and Hurd met in 2013 and started dating in 2015. In 2017, she told PEOPLE, “We had been friends for only a couple of years, but there was always this writing chemistry in the room, and eventually, the timing of it was undeniable. We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, ‘Why are we avoiding this?'”

Morris and Hurd have been married since 2018, and they have one child together, a 3-year-old son named Hayes. Now, Morris wants to call it quits. According to the divorce papers she filed, she is claiming the reason for wanting a divorce is due to “irreconcilable differences.”

According to the court documents, Morris wants joint custody of her son, and she is requesting that their prenuptial agreement is enforced by the court.
