Conan O’Brien Loses Both Parents Only Three Days Apart

Dr. Thomas O’Brien and his wife, Ruth Reardon O’Brien, the parents of late-night comedian Conan O’Brien, passed away just three days apart. Thomas died on Monday, December 9, at the age of 95, following a period of declining health, The Boston Globe reports. Ruth died peacefully on December 12 at the age of 92, according to an obituary from Bell-O’Dea Funeral Home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Married for 66 years, the couple had six children, including Conan, 61, who has often credited his father for inspiring his love of stand-up comedy. Thomas introduced his children to classic comedians like Jack Benny, Charlie Chaplin, and the Marx Brothers.

“The loudest I’ve ever heard anybody laugh was sitting next to him in a theater watching Peter Sellers in a Pink Panther movie,” Conan told The Boston Globe. “[My dad] was often the funniest guy in the room. And when he would laugh, his whole body would convulse and he would almost hug himself.”

Conan’s Father was renowned for his groundbreaking research in antimicrobial drug resistance. He served as the inaugural director of the infectious diseases division at what is now Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His career spanned over 60 years at both Brigham and Women’s and Harvard Medical School, where he held the position of associate professor. He retired in 2019 at the age of 90.

His Mother Ruth attended Yale Law School, where she was one of only four women in her class. She began her career as a law clerk for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court before becoming a real estate attorney at the Boston firm Ropes & Gray. In 1978, she made history as the firm’s second-ever female partner. In 2017, she received the iRelaunch Pioneering Relauncher Award, becoming its second recipient.

Conan’s parents married in 1958. They were introduced through Ruth’s brothers who were classmates of Thomas.

The couple is survived by their children Conan, Justin, Neal, Luke, Kate, Jane and nine grandchildren.

Rest In Peace.
