Oprah Clarifies That the Queen and Prince Philip Were Not the Royals Who Made Comments About Archie’s Skin Color

Last night on CBS, we were finally able to see Oprah Winfrey sit down for an interview with Harry and Meghan, the former senior royals turned residents of southern California. The couple shared a lot of surprising revelations, but one of them was particularly shocking. We’re talking about racism.

If you have ever wondered how the royal family felt about Harry deciding to marry a woman who is mixed-race, we think that last night’s interview cleared it up, at least when it comes to one or more unnamed members of the family. Meghan shared that early on when she was pregnant and didn’t know whether Archie was going to be a boy or a girl, there were several particularly surprising and uncomfortable conversations about what would happen when their child was born.

Meghan said, “We have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title.’ And also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

First of all, refusing to give Archie security and a title go against the royal family’s protocol, but they wanted to change the rules for Archie. Why? Meghan seemed to think that it was due to the fact that he was mixed race and they were concerned about what color his skin might be.

Although Meghan and Harry refused to share which member of the royal family was concerned about the baby’s skin color, Harry did tell Oprah off-camera that it was not his grandmother or grandfather. On CBS This Morning, Oprah explained, “He did not share the identity with me, but he wanted to make sure that I knew, and if I had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother, nor his grandfather that were part of those conversations. … He did not tell me who were a part of those conversations. As you could see I tried to get that answer, on-camera and off.”

Does it surprise you that one or more people in the royal family were concerned about what color Archie’s skin would be? Who do you think was a part of those conversations?
