Comedian Shares How Trolls Comments About Her ‘Moon Face’ Led To A Medical Diagnosis
Comedian Amy Schumer reveals how internet trolls led her to an important Medical diagnosis. During a January 22 “Call Her Daddy” podcast interview, Schumer talked about how she tried to ignore comments about her swollen face until doctors added their opinions to the discussion.
“Doctors were chiming in in the comments and they were, like, ‘No, no … something’s really up. Your face looks so crazy,'” she told Alex Cooper. The doctors suspected she may have Cushing syndrome.
According to The Cleveland Clinic, “Cushing syndrome is a condition caused by too much of the hormone cortisol in the body. The excess may happen because of medications or because your body produces too much of the hormone. There are treatments for Cushing syndrome. Treatment may last for some time.”
According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome include weight gain, a round “moon face,” easy bruising, fat accumulation around the neck and shoulders, stretch marks on the abdomen, hips, breasts, and underarms, as well as muscle weakness.
The condition most commonly affects adults aged 30 to 50 and is three times more prevalent in women than in men.
Schumer attributes her diagnosis after a series of steroid shots from her breast reduction and Cesarean section.
“So I got these was getting these steroid injections and so it gave me this thing called Cushing syndrome — which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard,” Schumer said.
The comedian told Cooper that just before filming the Netflix comedy Kinda Pregnant, which premieres on February 5, she “learned I had this condition, and that I had something called moon face, and I’m starring in a movie — and there’s a camera right in my face.”
“Everyone’s like, ‘You look great,’ ” she said, then an honest friend told Schumer, “Your face is looking, like, a little bit insane.”
In Schumer’s case, Cushing’s syndrome was caused by steroid usage, and she was able to cure her condition by reducing her steroid treatments. Also, the ‘moon face’ symptom is gone.
