Updated-College Student Goes Missing During Spring Break Beach Walk in The Dominican Republic

A University of Pittsburgh student who was reported missing while visiting the Dominican Republic last week is now believed to have drowned, officials confirmed to ABC News on Sunday.
Three Dominican officials involved in the investigation told ABC News that Konanki had been walking along the beach with six others on March 5 before she was presumed to have drowned in the ocean. According to a Dominican Republic investigative police report, most of the group returned to the hotel later that night, while one individual remained with her on the beach. The report states that the two went for a swim and were swept away by a large wave. Security camera footage captured Konanki’s last known sighting on the beach at approximately 4:50 a.m. on March 6.
A 20-year-old college student has gone missing after setting out for an early morning walk on the beach while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Sudiksha Konanki, a junior at the University of Pittsburgh and a resident of Loudoun County, Virginia, was last seen on Thursday, March 6, near the Riu Republica Resort in Punta Cana, according to the Dominican Civil Defense and a missing persons poster circulating on social media. A citizen of India, Konanki was in the Dominican Republic for spring break.
She had been traveling with a group of six fellow University of Pittsburgh students, all female, including another Loudoun County resident, a spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement.
At this time, it remains unclear whether Konanki’s travel companions have returned home or if any of them were with her at the time of her disappearance.
The search for Sudiksha Konanki began in the early hours of Saturday, March 8, but yielded no results, according to the Dominican Civil Defense. Efforts resumed at 6 a.m. local time on Sunday, March 9, with drones and helicopters deployed by the country’s armed forces, the agency shared in an Instagram update, along with footage of the ongoing beach search.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) stated that after being notified of Konanki’s disappearance on Thursday evening, they immediately coordinated with federal and state law enforcement agencies, as well as contacts in the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, the Embassy of India in the Dominican Republic has taken the lead in efforts on the ground, the agency confirmed.
Konanki is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes. According to the missing persons poster, she was last seen wearing a brown bikini, round earrings, an anklet, and multiple bracelets.
