Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have been very open about a recent and tragic experience in their lives. Teigen, who was halfway through her pregnancy with a baby boy they had come to call Jack, had a miscarriage

Last week, she posted on Instagram that she was in the hospital receiving blood transfusions, but she noted, “Baby and I are completely fine.”

Just two days later, she posted again on Instagram, but this time it was heartbreaking. She wrote, “We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

She wrote that she and Legend never name their children until right before they are born, but for whatever reason, they had come to refer to this baby as Jack. He will always be Jack.

Teigen included a sweet message to baby Jack on her Instagram post, “To our Jack – I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive.  We will always love you.”

She went on to express gratitude for their two healthy children, Luna and Miles, but to describe how she was currently feeling as “the darkest of days.”

Miscarriage is often a taboo subject, but the fact that Teigen is being so open about the loss and the pain she feels could be very helpful and healing for many, many people who have had similar experiences.

Lauren Bishop, M.D., a fertility specialist at the Columbia University Fertility Center, told Vogue, “Women rarely speak about these experiences as they often occur prior to when they would typically start sharing the news of their pregnancy. Therefore, oftentimes women may feel very alone, that they are the only ones experiencing such tragic outcomes.”
