Chipotle Just Unveiled Their First (Entirely Edible) Holiday Window Display

So, the marketing team at Chipotle decided to totally think outside the box this year when it came to designing the Chipotle holiday window display. And we’re not complaining.

This year, they’re not going with a standard window cling promoting its burritos or the typical “Make your burritos bright!” headline. No, no—Chipotle is using edible decorations this year to truly get into the holiday spirit.

That’s right. Their holiday window display this year will mimic holiday scenes, and use edible food from the Chipotle menu to do it.

“In the spirit of full transparency, we’re putting our real food front and center through these festive holiday window displays that will come to life using only our 51 real ingredients,” Chris Brandt, chief marketing officer, said in a company press release. “We hope the window display gets everyone in the holiday spirit while also showcasing Chipotle’s longstanding commitment to preparing fresh food using real ingredients.”

The secret behind the madness are Philidelphia-based food sculptors, husband and wife team, Marie Pelton and Jim Victor, who were hired to do the job right. They’ve been at work crafting anything from onion ornaments to lettuce Christmas trees using all our favorites in between: corn, cheese, rice, peppers, salsa and avocado.

We know what you’re thinking: But how will they keep the avocado from turning brown? Don’t worry, they’re professionals. They’ve got some tricks up their sleeves.

“We’ve been really utilizing avocado skins—great for boots and hats—but according to Chipotle employees, the key to freshness [for the guac in store] is lime juice and pressing the guacamole into the container to avoid air bubbles,” Pelton said.

Their very first window display was a Christmas tree. But instead of a real Evergreen, they used romaine lettuce for the leaves and lemons, limes, and tomatoes for ornaments. It honestly looks so real!

The two have lots more yummy plans up their sleeves. Another scene they did? A holiday angel, with its face carved from an onion, and whose outfit is made from a burrito. It’s amazingly clever!

The scenes are all displayed at Chipotle location near New York City’s Columbus Circle due to its oversized windows. In total, there will be five different displays created.

As you can imagine, that requires a ton of food. To be exact—”about 80 heads of romaine lettuce, a crate each of lemons, limes, tomatillos, tomatoes, more than 100 tortillas, large containers of fresh spices, 10 pounds of salt and pepper and moderate amounts of jalapeños, poblanos, onions, garlic, gypsum, avocado, cheese, corn, juniper berries, tomato paste and pinto beans,” said Pelton.

The food is never wasted though, so don’t worry about that. The food they use in the displays is actually all composted, and then donated to local farms.

The two food artists absolutely love being able to get creative with food—especially this genre of food. “[Working with mexican food] is fantastic actually,” Pelton said. “We really like working with the ingredients, especially the dry ingredients. It has great color and great texture and it was really a thrill.”

Do you live in NYC and have been able to see these incredible holiday-themed food displays? What do you think of this neat idea?
