Celeb Reveals Surprising Confession About Drinking Alcohol
Actress, chef and now “Drew Crew” member on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Valerie Bertinelli certainly has had a lot of accomplishments in her career, but now she’s adding another one.
Bertinelli told PEOPLE that she decided to give up drinking alcohol in January. She explained that she started with “dry January” and simply kept going. While she doesn’t think she was ever an alcoholic, she likes the way she feels when she doesn’t drink.
Bertinelli explained, “I don’t think I ever really had a problem [with alcohol] and that’s why it was a bit, I don’t want to say easy, but it was an easier path for me to start with dry January and then go, ‘Well, I’m halfway through February, now I might as well just keep going.’ And now for me, I kind of make a game of it.”
It has now been about nine months since she had a drink, and she feels “clearer.” She explained, “Even with life struggles and how life can be challenging, I find that it is easier to get myself clearer faster, about what I need to do and taking care of my life.”
Bertinelli explained that mornings are easier for her now as well. She said, “I feel good when I wake up in the morning. I’m not groggy. I’m not tired. I’m not: ‘What did I do last night?’”
The actress has no plans on going back to drinking alcohol. She shared, “I don’t miss it because I don’t miss how it actually made me feel either after having it or the next day.”
She thinks it’s better for her body to abstain, especially since she’s getting older. She shared, “I think the older you get, the less you really want to really be putting that in your body. I mean, anybody can do whatever the heck they want, but I feel better.”

Now, as part of the cast on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Bertinelli has the opportunity to discuss many topics that are personal and important to her, such as menopause. Bertinelli explained that she loves being part of the “Drew Crew” because of how open the show is about these important topics. She said, “Drew tackles subjects that I wish I had heard about 10 years ago, like menopause alone.” She added, “She tackles subjects that not a lot of people do, and she does it with such grace and such vulnerability and authenticity to her and that all of us can relate to. I love being there.”
