CBS Shocks Fans by Canceling S.W.A.T. Amid Major Network Cuts
CBS has canceled S.W.A.T. for the third time, following the axing of two other shows in the network’s latest round of cuts. Despite being previously revived after its sixth season, this cancellation may be final as the network once again drops the popular series.
S.W.A.T. is a high-octane police procedural drama that follows the Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team as they tackle dangerous missions and high-stakes operations to protect the city.
The series centers around Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, played by Shemar Moore, a former Marine and a dedicated officer who is torn between his loyalty to the community where he was raised and his duty to uphold the law. Leading an elite team of officers, Hondo navigates complex cases involving crime syndicates, hostage situations, and domestic terrorism, all while dealing with internal conflicts and personal challenges.
Premiering in 2017 on CBS, S.W.A.T. is known for its intense action sequences, socially relevant storylines, and strong character development. The show has faced multiple cancellations and revivals, demonstrating its dedicated fan base and ongoing popularity.
S.W.A.T.‘s cast and producers received the heartbreaking news on Thursday evening.
“It’s heartbreaking news, primarily because it’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we’ve always been proud of,” executive producer Andrew Dettmann said in a statement, per Variety.
“They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can’t give them enough credit.”
The announcement arrives midway through what is now its final season, with nine episodes still left to air—leaving fans heartbroken over the show’s cancellation.
The series was initially canceled in 2023 after its sixth season and again after its seventh. However, both times, it was revived after CBS, Sony Pictures TV, and CBS Studios reached a licensing agreement that satisfied all parties, according to Variety. Earlier this week, CBS also axed FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International.
