Burger King Unveils Their New “Restaurant of Tomorrow” Concept

When a fast food restaurant does some renovations it usually includes something like changing the flooring, repainting the walls, and upgrading the technology features. Usually the restaurant’s basic layout doesn’t change too much.

Burger King isn’t planning on doing your typical renovation. The fast food chain is basically starting from scratch to make major changes that they feel will appeal to changes in consumer behavior.

While most fast food restaurants offer ordering options like walk-up service, ordering from a mobile app or driving through the drive-thru, Burger King is even expanding on that.

In addition to the options mentioned above, the new restaurants would also include ordering similar to Sonic where customers can pull up to designated spots, order from their car and then have the order carried out to their car by an employee.

Another innovative pickup option includes the use of lockers where customers and delivery drivers could open the locker, and their food would be waiting for them.

Yes, there would still be a dine-in option, but the dining area would be smaller, and there would be more exterior dining space.

In some locations where space is limited, the dining area and the kitchen would actually be suspended over the drive-thru.

Speaking of the drive-thru, as more and more people are choosing to place orders from their car, the drive-thru at most locations would include 2 or even 3 separate lanes.

In a press release, Josh Kobza, Restaurant Brands International Chief Operating Officer, explained, “In March our in-house design and tech team accelerated new restaurant design plans and pushed the limits of what a Burger King restaurant could be.” He added, “We took into consideration how consumer behaviors are changing and our guests will want to interact with our restaurants. The result is a new design concept that is attractive to guests and will allow our franchisees to maximize their return.”

In the same press release, Rapha Abreu, Global Head of Design at Restaurant Brands International, stated, “We designed the interior and exterior spaces like we had a blank sheet of paper, designing without preconceived notions of how a Burger King restaurant should look.”

Burger King plans to start the renovation project in 2021. The first restaurants to be updated with the new concepts will be located in Miami, the Caribbean and Latin America.
