Miley Cyrus is facing a legal battle over her chart-topping single “Flowers.” According to a new lawsuit, the pop star is being accused of copying significant elements of Bruno Mars’ hit song “When I Was Your Man” for her Grammy Award-winning track.

The lawsuit, filed by Tempo Music Investments, claims that “Flowers” bears an unmistakable resemblance to Bruno Mars’ 2013 hit. Tempo Music, which owns a share of the copyright for “When I Was Your Man,” alleges that Miley’s song has numerous musical similarities, including the melody, harmony, and chorus, which mirror the verse from Bruno’s hit. According to the legal documents, the company believes that these similarities are not coincidental, stating that Miley “intentionally copied” elements of Bruno’s song.

Tempo Music’s lawsuit also argues that the chord progressions in “Flowers” are too close to those in “When I Was Your Man” to be accidental. Furthermore, they claim that some of the lyrics in Miley’s song also align with Bruno’s original track. The legal team for Tempo Music insists that “Flowers” would not have existed without the inspiration from Bruno’s song.

Interestingly, Bruno Mars himself is not a plaintiff in the lawsuit. The legal action has been initiated solely by Tempo Music, the company managing part of the copyright for “When I Was Your Man.” Despite this, the lawsuit is a significant move, as the company is seeking monetary compensation and demanding that Miley be prohibited from distributing or performing “Flowers.”

The stakes are high for Cyrus, whose “Flowers” has garnered widespread success since its release. The song, which has become a global hit, even earned her a Grammy Award. However, Tempo Music believes that Cyrus and her team owe much of this success to the groundwork laid by Mars’ earlier track. They argue that Miley’s Grammy-winning success is directly tied to the elements she allegedly borrowed from Bruno Mars’ song, which topped the charts a decade earlier.

In the lawsuit, Tempo Music asserts, “It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man.’” This statement highlights the company’s belief that Cyrus’ team had full access to Mars’ song and intentionally incorporated key elements into “Flowers.”

As of now, neither Miley Cyrus nor her legal representatives have responded to the lawsuit. It remains to be seen how the legal process will unfold, but the accusations could lead to significant consequences for Cyrus, especially if the court rules in favor of Tempo Music.

Although Bruno Mars is not directly involved in the lawsuit, the similarities between the two songs could have broader implications for both artists. Fans of both singers are closely watching this case as it could reshape discussions about copyright infringement in the music industry.

Do you think Miley Cyrus intentionally copied Bruno Mars’ hit song, or is this just a coincidence?
