Bride Sparks Debate After Banning Blind Friend From Bringing Service Dog to Her Wedding

Many little girls grow up dreaming of their wedding day. The pretty dresses, the beautiful flowers and the romantic idea of marrying your own Prince Charming have a certain allure.

What no little girl dreams of is refusing to let her friend attend her wedding, but real life is more complicated than our childish imagination can make it out to be.

In Reddit’s AITA (Am I The A******?) forum, one 28-year-old bride is facing a real dilemma. While she is looking forward to her wedding day, she also feels like she is in a lose lose situation.

The bride’s friend is blind and uses a service dog to get around. She is refusing to let her friend bring the service dog to the wedding. At first, that sounds terribly insensitive, but it gets more complicated.

The bride has asthma and a severe dog allergy. She shared that “when I meet with my friend we meet in the open and I take two allergy pills. However, because of all the other medication I take these pills make me extremely drowsy to the point where I am officially not allowed to drive and I usually crash as soon as I get home from our get togethers.”

The wedding will be held inside, and the rooms will be small. She feels that having a dog at the wedding just won’t work; however, she offered to pay for a professional aid to assist her friend at the wedding, and some of the bride’s friends offered to help as well.

The friend did not take this news well. “She accused me of being ableist and thinking her disability can be switched off for the day.”

In the comments, many people are siding with the bride. One comment reads, “I think a severe allergy is pretty legit…it sounds like you’ve gone out of your way to try to make sure she can still be included without the service dog.”

Another person wrote, “OP put real thought into finding options that would accommodate her and be functional for both of them. The friend should have more consideration for how OP’s allergy has been affecting her.”

Another reader commented, “I think this is just a misunderstanding…I would talk to your friend more and see if any of the solutions you mentioned could work or see if either of you could come up with more options. I feel bad for both you and your friend, this is a difficult situation.”

Do you think the bride should allow her friend to bring her dog to the wedding? Do you think the blind friend should be more understanding of her own friend’s illnesses?
