Brian Williams Signs Off On His Final Broadcast With a Warning for the Country
A month ago, Brian Williams, the host of the show “The 11th Hour with Brian Williams,” sent a statement to his colleagues at NBC informing them that he had decided to retire. At age 62, when his contract with NBC ended in December, he was not going to renew his contract. Instead, he was going to walk away.
In the memo that he sent, Williams wrote, “I have been truly blessed.” He explained, “I have been allowed to spend almost half of my life with one company. NBC is a part of me and always will be.”
During Williams’ time at NBC, he covered 7 presidential elections and 8 Olympic games. From 2004 to 2015, Williams anchored “NBC Nightly News.” He was later fired from the show after it was discovered that he made false statements about circumstances during events he covered. In 2016, he was rehired to anchor a new show, “The 11th Hour with Brian Williams” on MSNBC.
Williams’ final broadcast of “The 11th Hour” aired on Thursday December 9, 2021. Before the show faded to black, Williams took the opportunity to give his final sendoff. He started by stating his political views. Then he explained how he feels about the current state of The United States of America. He expressed concern for the country and emphasized that we should all be concerned as well. He said, “That should scare you to no end.”
Despite his concern for our nation, Williams plans to try to enjoy retirement. He explained that he’ll have more time to spend with family and friends. He is going to try to relax, but it doesn’t seem that he thinks he’ll enjoy being off the air for long. It sounds like we may one day see him in front of a camera again if he is unable to enjoy life off air long term.
Williams also expressed gratitude for his career and everyone involved in it, including colleagues and the people he has interviewed. He realized he had a unique opportunity “to meet presidents and kings and the occasional rock star.”
Then Williams turned the topic back to “the America of 2021, a nation unrecognizable to those who came before us and fought to protect it.” Watch Williams final sign off below.
Do you think Williams will be back in front of a camera again one day? Do you think his concern for the nation had anything to do with his decision to retire? Does it surprise you that he seems particularly concerned about the America of 2021?
