Bestselling Author Passed Away At 81
Nelson DeMille, a best selling suspense and action author, passed away on August 17. He was 81.
His children Lauren DeMille and Alex DeMille confirmed his death to The New York Post. “Nelson fought a valiant nine-month battle with esophageal cancer,” his family said in an issued statement to The Post. “True to form, he faced this ordeal with courage, grace, and good humor. We are grieving, but also celebrating his wonderful life and his lasting legacy as a father, friend, and storyteller.”
DeMille’s most famous books include “Plum Island,” “The Charm School” and “The General’s Daughter,” which was turned into a movie starring John Travolta, released in 1999.
Born on August 23, 1943, in New York City, DeMille grew up on Long Island and attended Hofstra University. His life experiences, particularly his service in The U.S. Army during the Vietnam War deeply influenced his writing. DeMille was a first lieutenant in the war, and this military background lends a sense of authenticity and depth to many of his novels. He received a bronze star in Vietnam.
DeMille’s literary career took off with his early novels, such as By the Rivers of Babylon (1978) and Cathedral (1981). However, it was The General’s Daughter (1992), a military-themed mystery novel later adapted into a film starring John Travolta, that took his success mainstream.. His ability to blend realism with fiction makes his novels both gripping and plausible.
One of DeMille’s most iconic characters is John Corey, a former NYPD detective and recurring protagonist in several of his novels, including Plum Island (1997), The Lion’s Game (2000), and Night Fall (2004). Corey is known for his cynical humor and determination, which has made him a fan favorite. These novels often explore themes of terrorism, international intrigue, and government conspiracy.
In all, DeMille authored 23 novels during his lifetime, with 17 becoming bestsellers. He wrote all of his books by hand, using pencils and legal pads.
DeMille’s wife, Sandra, passed away in 2018. He is survived by his three children: Lauren, Alex, and James.
Rest In Peace.
