B.J. Novak’s Face Is Appearing On Products All Over the World and He’s Not Sure Why

What would you do if your face just started randomly appearing on marketing for products all over the world? That’s what’s been happening to The Office star B.J. Novak.

Apparently, a picture of him was mistakenly put on a public domain site years ago and it was all downhill from there. He began seeing images of himself pop up from time to time, and it hasn’t stopped since. In fact, the photo always seems to find a way back to him.

“Years ago, someone mistakenly put an image of me on a public domain site, and now apparently I am on products all around the world,” he said.

In a recent post on his Instagram stories, Novak shared just some of the products his face has appeared on. He’s been used for packages on everything from a rain slicker, to an electric razor and rechargeable electric hair clippers. He’s even been seen outside of the U.S., like on an ad for cologne sold in Sweden and face paint sold in Uruguay.

Perhaps it’s all karma from his Ryan Howard character on the show. Office fans might recall the episode on the seventh season when Ryan plastered images of his co-worker Phyllis on bottles of pesto he was selling at a company garage sale. He also used a picture of another co-worker, Oscar, on jars of salsa. Guess what goes around comes around—even in real life!

In all seriousness, Novak is actually entitled to take some legal stances, if he wanted to.

“It’s really the fact that his face or likeness is associated with a particular product, because they’re using his likeness in order to attract customers and basically make money,” said Marc Misthal, a principal lawyer at Gottlieb, Rackman & Reisman, a New York law firm.

Misthal believes that Novak is should start a case against the companies that made money off of his photo, and not necessarily the person who put his photo on that public domain website.

However, it doesn’t seem like Novak is very interested in stopping the madness.

So why hasn’t he stopped the media from continuing to broadcast his face on products? Check out the video below for his hilarious response to that question!
