Elena Larrea’s journey as an advocate began with a deep-rooted passion for protecting animals. She founded Cuacolandia, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating horses subjected to abuse and neglect. Larrea poured her heart and soul into the sanctuary, ensuring that every horse received the care and compassion they deserved. “We will remember and continue working for everything that was courageously promoted by this foundation,” a statement from the santucary read. “We will promote her legacy and love so that our horses, donkeys and mules live in freedom and in adequate conditions in Mexico and here, our sanctuary for horses rescued from abuse and abandonment.”
Tragically, Larrea’s life was cut short due to pulmonary thrombosis, a condition caused by a blood clot in her lung. The news of her passing sent shockwaves through the animal rights community, with tributes pouring in from friends, fellow activists, and public figures alike.

Mexican actress Sylvia Pasquel fondly remembered Larrea as an angel on earth, praising her tireless efforts to create a better world for animals. “You left a beautiful mark on everyone we met, you were an angel on earth for many…” she wrote. “Your example and legacy will continue to inspire those of us who seek a better world for animals.”
Music artist Rich Vagos echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Larrea’s bravery and unwavering dedication to her cause. “We want to express our deepest condolences on the death of our friend Elena Larrea,” he shared. “He continued, [A] fighter, brave, strong, activist and irreverent as she described herself, she will be remembered for her passion and tireless work dedicated to the protection of animals.”
