Mama Mary Schmucker, beloved star of TLC’s Breaking Amish, has passed away at the age of 65 following a courageous three-year battle with colon cancer, her family has confirmed.
Mary died peacefully at her home in Pennsylvania on Friday. She had been fighting cancer since 2022 and entered hospice care in November 2024, as shared in an Instagram update from her daughter-in-law, Rebecca, who asked for prayers during Mary’s final days.
“I’m making a prayer request for mom. She’s not feeling good the last few weeks and can’t keep anything down and she’s having trouble eating. She is on hospice now. Her pain has been so bad and they are helping with that. If you could, flood her with positive messages and pray for her to be comfortable and pain free. Thank you!🙏🏼”

A fan favorite since the first season of Breaking Amish, Mary also appeared in the spinoff series Return to Amish. Over the years, she built a loyal social media following, with 35,000 Instagram fans who tuned in regularly to her live streams—until her health began to decline.
Mary’s final Instagram post, shared in September 2023, has since been filled with heartfelt messages from fans mourning her loss. She is survived by her husband, Chester, and their five children — including Abe, Katie Ann, and Andy — all of whom made appearances on the show alongside her.
Breaking Amish is a reality TV series that premiered on TLC in 2012, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the lives of young Amish and Mennonite adults as they leave their insular communities to experience life in the outside world. The show follows a group of cast members who travel to New York City, confronting modern temptations, culture shock, and personal struggles as they decide whether to return to their traditional way of life or embrace a new path.
The series quickly became a hit for its raw emotional moments, cultural clashes, and the unique perspective it offered into a community rarely seen on television. Central to the show’s success was Mary Schmucker, affectionately known as Mama Mary, who became a fan favorite with her warm personality and spirited attitude. Though not a main cast member in the first season, she gained prominence in the spinoff Return to Amish, where she supported younger cast members as they navigated life between two worlds.
While Breaking Amish received some criticism for staged elements and questions about cast backgrounds, it sparked ongoing interest in the Amish lifestyle and the challenges of leaving such a strict society. The show ran for several seasons and remains a memorable part of TLC’s reality TV lineup.
