For Anyone Supporting “All Lives Matter,” Ashton Kutcher Has Strong Words

In the midst of the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, actor Ashton Kutcher came onto Instagram to share his standpoint—his very emotional standpoint.

Black Lives Matter is a way to highlight racism, discrimination, and racial inequality that black people have been experiencing in their day-to-day life. However, there are people who may not understand what that could be like .Those people are the same ones who are confused why it’s “just” black lives that matter—don’t ALL lives matter? That’s where the phrase “All lives mater came from.”

However, it’s just not that simple. And Kutcher has some words for these people: “When it comes to Black Lives Matter, I think what folks that are writing ‘All Lives Matter’ need to understand is that for some people black lives don’t matter at all,” he said through a wealth of tears. “So for us, black lives matter.”

He knows that these people aren’t trying to be malicious against black people—they have good intentions. But it was important for him to get his point across: “While you may have the best intentions in saying, ‘All lives matter,’ remember: For some people, black lives don’t matter at all,” he explained.

Kutcher had a unique experience that really drove home the point for him. It became clear during a routine bedtime with his wife, Mila Kunis, and their children that night. He explained that in their house, his daughter gets to read her bedtime story before his son—because in their house, girls go first.

He told his son, “You know why girls go first? For you and me, girls go first. And the reason why is, for some boys, girls don’t get a go at all. And so for you and me, girls go first.'”

Kutcher doesn’t blame the people who are saying that “All lives matter,” and doesn’t think people saying this mean that black lives don’t matter. But he does think it’s a matter of not knowing any better and needing to be more educated on the movement.

“I don’t think the people that are posting ‘All lives matter’ should be canceled. I think they should be educated,” he said. “We all agree all lives matter.”
