A former NCAA All-American skier tragically died following a skiing accident at Palisades Tahoe resort in Olympic Valley on Saturday, according to authorities speaking with the Los Angeles Times.

Ellery “Ellie” Curtis, 26, a former alpine skier for Dartmouth College, sustained a fatal head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. The resort is located in the Greater Lake Tahoe region.

Deputies responded to an emergency call around 3:45 p.m., but Curtis had already passed away by the time they arrived, said sheriff’s spokesperson Elise Soviar.

The incident took place on Ahhh Chute, a difficult run accessed via Palisades’ renowned KT-22 lift. According to POWDER, ski patrol arrived at the scene within minutes, but Curtis ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

A former captain of the Dartmouth College Alpine ski team, Curtis was remembered by her coaches as someone whose passion extended well beyond the slopes. Dartmouth described her as “an exceptional member of the Dartmouth family,” noting that her spirit, compassion, and determination left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

“Ellie Curtis was a hardworking, passionate and driven student athlete whose passions went beyond the snow,”  Dartmouth coach, John C. Dwyer and Anny Jenny, said in an email, to the LA Times. “Ellie was kind, caring and loved to be involved in many organizations and environmental projects.”

Originally from Waitsfield, Vermont, Curtis was living in San Francisco and worked as an analyst for the California Public Utilities Commission, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Dartmouth noted that she enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping, biking, and hiking.
